When Love Pays the Debt You Cannot Pay

In the 2012 film Les Misérables, there is a moment that should stop every heart in the theater. Jean Valjean, a convict hardened by nineteen years in prison, is caught stealing silver from the home of Bishop Myriel — the one man who had shown him kindness. The police drag Valjean back to the bishop's door, certain this will mean a return to chains.

But the bishop does something no one expects. He looks at Valjean and says the silver was a gift. Then he hands him the silver candlesticks too, whispering, "I have bought your soul for God."

That is not justice. That is not fairness. That is love absorbing a debt it did not owe, covering a sin it did not commit, and spending itself so that someone else might walk free.

This is precisely what the Almighty did for us at the cross. We were the ones caught with stolen goods — lives lived for ourselves, grace taken for granted, mercy squandered. And rather than letting the full weight of justice fall on us, God stepped forward and said, "They are Mine. I have paid the price."

The bishop's candlesticks cost him something real. The cross cost God everything.

That is the love we are called to receive — and then, with trembling hands, to give away.
