When Love Refuses to Press Charges

In the 2012 film Les Misérables, there is a scene that stops you cold. Jean Valjean, a convict freshly released after nineteen years in prison, is taken in by Bishop Myriel, who feeds him and gives him a bed for the night. Valjean repays this kindness by stealing the bishop's silver and slipping away in the darkness.

The police catch him. They drag him back to the bishop's door, the stolen silver as evidence. This is the moment where justice should speak. But the bishop does something no one expects. He looks at Valjean and says he gave him the silver — and then hands him the two silver candlesticks as well, gently scolding him for leaving them behind.

The officers release Valjean, confused. And the bishop leans close and whispers that with this silver, he has bought Valjean's soul for God.

That is the shape of love. Not a transaction. Not a reward for good behavior. A gift pressed into the hands of someone who did nothing to deserve it.

The Apostle Paul wrote it plainly: "While we were still sinners, Christ died for us." The Lord does not wait for us to clean ourselves up. He meets us at the door with arms full of mercy, offering more than we ever thought to take.

That is the love we are called to carry into the world — love that refuses to press charges and instead presses candlesticks into guilty hands.
