When Silver Becomes Grace

In the 2012 film Les Misérables, Jean Valjean — a hardened ex-convict played by Hugh Jackman — is taken in for the night by Bishop Myriel. Desperate and bitter after nineteen years in prison, Valjean repays the Bishop's kindness by stealing his silver. When the police drag Valjean back in chains, the Bishop does something that changes the trajectory of a man's entire life. He tells the officers that the silver was a gift — and then presses the silver candlesticks into Valjean's hands as well, insisting he forgot to take them.

That moment is love in its most radical form. Not a feeling. Not a reward for good behavior. A deliberate choice to see someone not as they are, but as they could become.

The Apostle Paul wrote that love "keeps no record of wrongs" (1 Corinthians 13:5). The Bishop had every right to press charges. Instead, he pressed candlesticks into the hands of the man who robbed him. He absorbed the cost of someone else's sin and transformed it into an invitation toward a new life.

This is what the Almighty does with us. We come to Him having squandered grace we didn't deserve. And rather than demanding repayment, He hands us more.
