When Silver Speaks Louder Than Justice

In the film Les Misérables, there is a scene that stops the heart. Jean Valjean, a convict hardened by nineteen years in prison, is caught stealing silver from Bishop Myriel — the one man who had shown him kindness. When the police drag Valjean back to the Bishop's door, everything in the story says this is the moment justice prevails.

But the Bishop does something no one expects. He tells the officers the silver was a gift. Then he picks up two silver candlesticks — the most valuable things he owns — and presses them into Valjean's trembling hands, urging him to use them to become an honest man.

In that moment, love did what punishment never could. Nineteen years of chains could not change Valjean's heart. One act of reckless, unearned love transformed him completely.

This is the love Paul describes in Romans 5:8 — "while we were still sinners, Christ died for us." God did not wait until we cleaned ourselves up. He did not demand we earn our way back. He pressed the most valuable thing He had — His own Son — into our undeserving hands and said, "Now go and live."

The world says people get what they deserve. The Gospel says people get what love gives. That is the difference that changes everything.
