When the Original File Was Never Lost

In 2022, Google introduced a feature on the Pixel 7 called Photo Unblur. With a single tap, the phone's machine learning engine takes an old, damaged, blurry photograph — maybe one pulled from a shoebox in your grandmother's attic — and restores it to startling clarity. Faces that were smudged into vague shapes suddenly sharpen into recognizable smiles. Colors that had faded to murky gray bloom back to life.

Here is what stopped me cold when I first saw it work: the technology does not invent new information. It recovers what was already embedded in the image file all along. The data was there — buried beneath layers of compression, damage, and degradation — but it was there. The algorithm simply knows how to find what the naked eye cannot see.

This is how the God of all restoration works in a human life. When sin and shame and years of hard living have blurred the image beyond recognition, we look in the mirror and think the original is gone forever. But the Almighty never lost the original file. He knows exactly who He created you to be, because He wrote the code Himself.

The prophet Joel promised it: "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten." Not replace — restore. Because what was lost was never lost to Him.

No damage in your life is beyond the resolution of His grace.
