When the Original Image Resurfaces

In 2022, Google introduced a feature on its Pixel phones called Photo Unblur. Using machine learning, it takes old photographs — blurry, faded, damaged by years of neglect — and restores them to startling clarity. A grainy snapshot from the 1970s suddenly reveals the freckles on your grandmother's cheeks. A water-stained wedding photo recovers the joy in your parents' eyes. The image was always there, buried beneath the distortion. The technology simply peeled back the layers of damage to reveal what had been true all along.

This is what God does with a human soul.

Sin distorts us. Grief blurs us. Shame layers over who we were made to be until we can barely recognize ourselves. We look in the mirror and see only the damage. But the Almighty sees the original image — the one He spoke into existence before the world's wear and tear took its toll. And His restoration is not about making us into something we never were. It is about recovering what was always there, the imago Dei buried beneath years of accumulated brokenness.

The prophet Joel promised it: "I will restore to you the years that the swarming locust has eaten." Not replace. Restore. Because the original was never lost to Him.

No matter how much distortion life has layered over you, the Master Artist still sees His original work — and He is not finished restoring it.
