Written Deeper Than Cells

In 2005, stem cell biologist Jonas Frisen at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm made a remarkable discovery. By measuring traces of carbon-14 left over from Cold War nuclear tests, he could determine the actual age of individual human cells. What he found startled the scientific world: the average age of cells in an adult human body is just seven to ten years. Your stomach lining replaces itself every few days. Your skin renews in two to three weeks. Your red blood cells last about four months. The body you inhabit today is, in almost every measurable way, not the same body you had a decade ago.

And yet you are still you.

Something persists beneath the constant renovation of flesh and bone. Your identity outlasts every cell that carries it. Science can map the turnover, but it cannot fully explain what holds the "you" together through all that change.

Scripture can. The Psalmist writes, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you." The God who names the stars also named you before a single cell divided. Your identity was never housed in tissue that wears out. It was spoken into being by the Almighty, and what He speaks does not decay.

So when life strips away the things you thought defined you — your role, your health, your appearance — remember this: you are not your cells. You are the one God knew before He made them.
