Written Deeper Than Skin

In 2005, Dr. Jonas Frisen at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm made a remarkable discovery. Using carbon-14 traces left in the atmosphere by Cold War nuclear testing, he measured the actual age of cells in the human body. What he found astonished the scientific community: your gut lining replaces itself every few days, your red blood cells every four months, your skeleton rebuilds roughly every decade. The body you inhabit today is almost entirely different from the one you had seven years ago.

And yet — you are still you.

Your name has not changed. Your memories persist. The people who love you still recognize you. Something about your identity runs deeper than the cells that carry it.

Scripture speaks to this with breathtaking clarity. When God told Jeremiah, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you" (Jeremiah 1:5), He was saying something no microscope could fully reveal: your identity was established before a single cell divided. It does not rest on the fragile scaffolding of biology. It rests on the unchanging knowledge of the Almighty.

We live in a world that ties identity to what shifts — career, appearance, health, social standing. All of these will turn over as surely as your red blood cells. But who God says you are? That word was spoken before your first heartbeat, and it will outlast your last.

Your body may rebuild itself a dozen times over. Your identity in Christ was built once and forever.
