For decades, geneticists dismissed roughly 98 percent of human DNA as "junk" — vast stretches of code that seemed to serve no purpose at all. The real work, they believed, happened in that slim 2 percent that coded for proteins. Then in 2012, the ENCODE project — a massive international research effort involving over 400 scientists — revealed something stunning. Much of that so-called junk DNA actually plays critical regulatory roles, acting as switches and dimmers that control when and how genes are expressed. What looked like meaningless filler turned out to be essential to making you, you.

Some of us carry around a similar belief about ourselves. We look at the parts of our story that feel purposeless — the awkward years, the failed career, the grief that reshaped us, the gifts nobody seems to need — and we label them junk. Wasted. Irrelevant. We reduce our identity to the 2 percent that looks productive and impressive, and we discard the rest.
