Written in You Before You Could Fly

In the 1660s, Dutch naturalist Jan Swammerdam made a stunning discovery. He carefully dissected a caterpillar and found, hidden inside its body, the folded beginnings of butterfly wings. The butterfly wasn't something the caterpillar would become later — it was already there, written into its very cells.

Modern science has confirmed what Swammerdam glimpsed. Inside every caterpillar are clusters of cells called imaginal discs — tiny blueprints for wings, antennae, and legs that exist from the earliest stages of life. When the caterpillar enters its chrysalis, most of its body dissolves into biological soup. But those imaginal discs survive. They take the raw material of what was and reshape it into what was always meant to be.

There is a sermon in that chrysalis.

Many of us feel like we are dissolving — circumstances breaking us down, old identities falling apart, nothing making sense anymore. But God, who knew you before He formed you in the womb, has written something into the very core of who you are that no season of dissolution can destroy. Your identity in Christ is not something you are still waiting to receive. It was placed in you by your Creator before you ever crawled.

"Before I formed you in the womb I knew you," the Lord told Jeremiah. The butterfly was always in the caterpillar. And the person God made you to be is already written in you — even now, especially now, when everything else seems to be falling apart.
