Written in Your Cells

In 2003, scientists completed the Human Genome Project — a thirteen-year effort to map every letter of human DNA. What they discovered astonished them. Your body contains roughly 37 trillion cells, and nearly every single one carries your complete genetic code. Cut your finger, and the cells that rush to heal the wound carry the full blueprint of who you are. A skin cell contains the same identity information as a brain cell or a heart cell. You are written into yourself at every level.

Here is what strikes me about this. You cannot lose your identity by losing a piece of yourself. Lose a limb, lose your hair, lose capacities you once relied on — and still, every remaining cell whispers your name. Your identity is not stored in one fragile location. It is woven through the whole of you.

Scripture says something remarkably similar. The prophet Isaiah records the voice of the Almighty: "I have engraved you on the palms of My hands" (Isaiah 49:16). Your identity before God is not a Post-it note stuck to a refrigerator. It is engraved. Permanent. Distributed through every promise He has ever spoken over you.

When you forget who you are — when grief or failure or age strips away the external markers — remember this: the God who designed DNA to carry identity in every cell has written your name somewhere it can never be erased.
