Written Into the Body

In 1996, Dr. Diana Bianchi at Tufts University made a remarkable discovery. During pregnancy, cells from the developing baby cross the placenta and embed themselves in the mother's body — in her heart, her brain, her bloodstream. Scientists call this fetal microchimerism. What stunned researchers was that these cells don't disappear after birth. They persist for decades. Bianchi's team found fetal cells living in mothers' bodies twenty-seven years after delivery.

Think about that. A mother carries pieces of her child in her own heart — literally, physically — long after that child has grown and gone. The love between mother and child isn't just emotional. It is written into the very tissue of her body.

Scripture tells us something strikingly similar about the love of God. Through the prophet Isaiah, the Lord declares, "I have engraved you on the palms of my hands" (Isaiah 49:16). Not written. Not painted. Engraved — cut into, permanently embedded. The Almighty doesn't love us from a distance. His love is inscribed into His very being.

And here is what makes it gospel: those fetal cells don't just sit idle. Researchers have found evidence that they migrate to sites of injury in the mother's body, helping to repair damaged tissue. The child's cells heal the mother who carried them.

That is the shape of divine love. It embeds itself. It remains. And where it dwells, it heals. You are not forgotten. You are carried — written into the heart of God Himself.
