Lessons from Ascension Day
As we gather to reflect on Ascension Day, I am reminded of a story that speaks to the heart of our faith journey. Picture a young woman named Maria, standing on the edge of a cliff, overlooking the vast sea. The waves crash below, sending up sprays of saltwater that gleam in the sunlight, just like the hopes and dreams she harbors deep within her heart. Maria has spent years grappling with feelings of uncertainty and fear, much like the early disciples after Christ’s ascension. They too stood gazing into the sky, bewildered by their future, left with the promise but without the presence of Jesus.
In this moment of vulnerability, Maria remembers her grandmother's words about the power of agape, the selfless love that reaches into the depths of despair and pulls us toward hope. She recalls how the Apostle Paul, in 1 Corinthians 15:55, triumphantly declares, "Where, O death, is your victory? Where, O death, is your sting?" These words resonate within her. They remind her that the ascension of Christ is not just about His departure, but rather about the transformative power of His presence that remains with us, guiding us through the storms of life.
With renewed courage, Maria takes a step back from the edge, choosing instead to embrace the firm ground beneath her feet. She understands that even amidst the uncertainties ahead, she is not alone. Just as the disciples were sent forth to share the good news, we too are empowered to navigate our lives with trust and awe, knowing that God’s word is alive, breathing hope into our everyday struggles. And so, let us lean into the promise of Ascension Day, allowing it to transform our fears into faith, our confusion into clarity, and our hesitance into bold action.
