Striving Against God: The Folly of Resisting the Maker
Isaiah 45:9 pronounces woe upon those who contend with their Maker—a rebuke aimed at deliberate opposition to the Divine purpose, not mere faint-hearted unbelief. The original audience resisted Elohim on two grounds: first, because He permitted His people's captivity in a distant land under oppression; second, because liberation seemed impossible, even beyond God's power to effect.
Striving with our Maker takes three forms: murmuring at His dispensations, resisting His authority, and contemning His instructions. Such resistance reveals profound ingratitude and folly. To oppose our best Friend—infinitely wiser than ourselves, loving us better than we love ourselves—while His irresistible power ensures His pleasure shall be accomplished either to our happiness or our ruin, is the height of baseness.
This striving manifests as denial of obedience to His commands. What greater dishonor exists than refusing service to that infinitely glorious and good Being upon whom our entire existence depends? Since the Fall, human life has been a continued struggle, with religion being the greatest domestic war within our own breasts. Happy are those who vigorously join forces with Yahweh of hosts, aligning their will with His sovereign purpose. But woe awaits him who partakes with the enemy, choosing to strive against his Maker—incurring certain defeat and ruin.
