The Lot Cast and God's Disposing Hand
The lot is cast into the lap; but the whole disposing thereof is of the Lord (Proverbs 16:33). All contingencies rest under the direction of God's providence.
Consider first the result of a lot in reference to men. Why suspend the decision of a dubious case upon it? Because it implies something future and something contingent—absolutely beyond man's knowledge and equally beyond his power. A contingent event baffles human knowledge and evades human control.
Consider second the result of a lot in respect to God. All contingencies are comprehended by Divine knowledge and governed by certain, steady providence. God directs the greatest casualties toward specific ends: for societies and particular persons—their lives, health, reputation, friendships, and employments. Since the interests of governments, nations, princes, and private persons remain wholly contingent to us despite all human contrivance and power, no solid ground of satisfaction exists except in making God our friend—He who is the sole and absolute disposer of all things.
Define the provinces of human and Divine agency. Our duty is commensurate with our power. We are responsible for the moral character of what depends upon ourselves. Within the circle where we have power to will and to do lies human agency; here we are held responsible. All beyond this province belongs to God's power. This thought of Divine providence is the most consoling and inspiring that visits the heart.
