Millions of Miles from Mission Control

NASA's Perseverance rover sits on the surface of Mars, over a hundred million miles from the engineers who built it. Because radio signals take between four and twenty-four minutes to travel between Earth and Mars, the rover cannot call home for real-time advice. Each sol, it receives a sequence of commands from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory, and then it obeys — rolling forward across unfamiliar terrain, drilling into rocks it has never touched, trusting that the team has accounted for what lies ahead.

Perseverance cannot see the full mission plan. It does not know why it has been told to turn left instead of right, or why this particular rock matters more than the one beside it. But every major discovery — ancient river channels, organic molecules, signs of a world that once held water — has come because the rover faithfully executed the next instruction.

Obedience to God often feels like that. He rarely shows us the entire map. He gives us the next step: forgive this person, give generously here, stay faithful in this difficult season. And like a rover on another planet, we cannot always see why. But the God who commands us sees what we cannot. Every instruction is shaped by a wisdom that spans eternity.

The question is never whether God's commands make perfect sense to us in the moment. The question is whether we trust the One sending them enough to move forward.
