The Compass They Never Learned to Read

Every autumn, monarch butterflies leave southern Canada and fly nearly three thousand miles to a small cluster of oyamel fir trees in the mountains of Michoacán, Mexico. What makes this journey astonishing is that the butterflies making the trip have never been there before. They are three or four generations removed from the monarchs that left Mexico the previous spring. No parent taught them the route. No scout flew ahead to mark the way.

Neurobiologist Steven Reppert at the University of Massachusetts Medical School discovered that monarchs navigate using a time-compensated sun compass located in their antennae. Their bodies carry instructions they did not write and cannot fully comprehend — and yet they obey. They fly south. They find the forest. They arrive at the exact same trees their great-great-grandparents left months earlier.

There is something here for every person who has ever struggled to obey God when the path ahead was unclear. Abraham left Ur not knowing where he was going. Moses approached Pharaoh with nothing but a staff and a word from the Almighty. Obedience rarely means understanding the full map. It means trusting that the One who planted the compass within you knows exactly where it leads.

The monarchs do not debate the direction. They do not demand proof that Mexico exists. They simply fly.

And so faith asks us: will you move in the direction God has set, even before you can see the destination?
