The Complaint That Became a Calling

In 1694, a young Isaac Watts sat in his father's Nonconformist chapel in Southampton, England, frustrated by the plodding, joyless psalm-singing that passed for worship. After the service, he did what many of us do — he complained. His father, a deacon, listened patiently and then issued a simple challenge: "Then give us something better, young man."

Watts could have dismissed those words. He could have argued that it wasn't his place, that he was too young, that someone more qualified should take it on. Instead, he obeyed. He went home and wrote a hymn. It was sung the following Sunday, and the congregation asked for another. Then another.

Over the next fifty years, Isaac Watts wrote over 750 hymns, including Joy to the World, O God, Our Help in Ages Past, and what many consider the greatest English hymn ever penned — When I Survey the Wondrous Cross. He became known as the Father of English Hymnody, transforming how the church worships to this day.

All because a young man obeyed a small, inconvenient challenge.
