The Composer Who Signed Every Score for God

Johann Sebastian Bach composed over a thousand works in his lifetime — cantatas, fugues, concertos, and chorales that still move audiences three centuries later. But what many don't know is what he wrote at the bottom of nearly every manuscript. Three small letters: S.D.G. — Soli Deo Gloria. "To God alone be the glory."

This wasn't a grand gesture reserved for his masterpieces. Bach inscribed those letters on practice exercises and minor commissions with the same faithfulness he brought to his greatest works. He rose before dawn. He copied parts by candlelight. He wrote music for churches that sometimes didn't appreciate him, for congregations that occasionally complained his compositions were too complex. And still, week after week, he sat down and obeyed the calling the Almighty had placed on his life.

Bach understood something about obedience that we easily forget: it is rarely a single dramatic moment. It is a daily rhythm. God does not often ask us for one heroic act of surrender. More often, He asks us to show up again tomorrow — to teach the class, visit the neighbor, speak the truth, pray when we don't feel like praying.
