The Flight They've Never Taken
Every autumn, monarch butterflies leave southern Canada and the eastern United States on a journey of up to three thousand miles to a small cluster of oyamel fir trees in the mountains of central Mexico. What makes this migration astonishing is that the generation making the trip has never been there before. These are the great-great-grandchildren of the monarchs who left Mexico the previous spring. They have no parent to follow, no memory to draw from, and no map.
Neurobiologist Steven Reppert at the University of Massachusetts Medical School discovered that monarchs navigate using a time-compensated sun compass located in their antennae, combined with sensitivity to the Earth's magnetic field. In other words, God built the directions into their very bodies. The butterflies don't need to understand the science of magnetoreception. They simply follow the pull — and they arrive exactly where they need to be.
Obedience often feels like that monarch flight. The Almighty asks us to move in a direction we haven't traveled, toward a destination we cannot yet see. We don't have the full map. We may not understand the why. But the One who wired the butterfly with an internal compass has also promised to guide our steps. Proverbs 3:6 says, "In all your ways acknowledge Him, and He will make your paths straight."
You don't need to see the whole route. You just need to trust the One who built it into you — and fly.
