The Gift That Requires Daily Faithfulness

Dr. Thomas Starzl, the father of modern organ transplantation, performed the first successful liver transplant in 1967. But the surgery itself was only half the battle. Starzl discovered that even a perfectly transplanted organ would be attacked and destroyed by the patient's own immune system unless the recipient committed to a strict regimen of immunosuppressant medications — taken at precise times, every single day, for the rest of their life.
