The Guardian of the Genome
In 1979, researchers discovered a protein called p53, which scientists now call "the guardian of the genome." Its job is remarkable in its simplicity: when a cell sustains damage to its DNA, p53 sends a signal telling that cell to stop dividing. If the damage is beyond repair, p53 instructs the cell to destroy itself for the good of the whole body. Healthy cells obey. They receive the signal, and they stop.

When the p53 gene is mutated, cells lose their ability to hear and heed that stop signal. They divide without restraint, ignoring every boundary the body has set. Scripture speaks of obedience not as a burden but as the very thing that holds life together. When the psalmist writes, "I run in the path of Your commands, for You have broadened my understanding" (Psalm 119:32), he is describing what every healthy cell already knows — that obedience to the One who designed us is not a restriction. It is what keeps us whole.
God's commands are not arbitrary. They are the signal that keeps the body flourishing. When we obey, we take our place in something far larger than ourselves. When we refuse, the damage rarely stays contained.
The question is never whether the signal has been sent. It is whether we are still willing to listen.
