The Gut That Thinks Before You Do

In 2004, neuroscientist Michael Gershon at Columbia University published research confirming what he called "the second brain" — a network of over 500 million neurons lining the human gut. This enteric nervous system doesn't wait for instructions from the brain in your skull. It acts on its own, directing digestion, triggering immune responses, and producing ninety-five percent of your body's serotonin without a single conscious thought from you.

Every time you eat, this hidden nervous system springs into action — breaking down nutrients, fighting pathogens, regulating mood — all without being asked twice. It doesn't debate. It doesn't negotiate. It simply responds to the design the Creator wired into it.

Scripture invites us into that same kind of deep, instinctive obedience. When Jesus told the disciples, "Follow me," Peter and Andrew dropped their nets immediately. They didn't form a committee. Their response was gut-level, wired by months of watching and listening until obedience became reflex.

That's what spiritual maturity looks like — not white-knuckled compliance, but a life so saturated in the Word that faithfulness becomes second nature. The Almighty doesn't want reluctant servants grinding through duty. He wants a people whose hearts are so trained in His ways that obedience flows as naturally as digestion.
