The Journey They Never Learned

Every autumn, monarch butterflies begin a journey of up to three thousand miles, from southern Canada to a fifty-acre forest in the mountains of Michoacán, Mexico. What makes this astonishing is that no single butterfly has ever made the trip before. The generation that arrives in Mexico is three or four generations removed from the ones that left the previous spring. They have no teacher, no map, no memory of the route. Yet they obey an internal compass — what neurobiologist Steven Reppert at the University of Massachusetts identified as a time-compensated sun compass combined with a magnetic sensing system encoded in their antennae.

These creatures weigh less than a paperclip, yet they cross a continent because something written deep inside them says, Go.

Obedience to God often feels like that. He asks us to move in a direction we have never traveled, toward a destination we cannot yet see. We have no map of what next year holds. We cannot preview the outcome. But the call is clear, and it is written deep — not in our antennae, but in our hearts, by the hand of the Living God.

The monarchs don't wait until the route makes sense. They fly. And every year, they arrive.

The question for us is simpler than we make it: Will we trust the One who calls, and go?
