The Long Way Home

If you have ever used Waze, the popular navigation app, you know the frustration. You are driving a route you have taken a hundred times, and suddenly Waze tells you to turn right where you have always gone straight. The detour looks absurd. It adds three miles and sends you down a road you have never heard of.

But here is what Waze knows that you do not. It is processing real-time data from millions of other drivers. It sees the accident on Interstate 94 that has not shown up on your windshield yet. It knows about the construction crew that shut down two lanes seven minutes ago. The app is not confused. It has information you lack, and it is asking you to trust what you cannot see.

Obedience to God works the same way. When the Lord tells Abraham to leave Ur, it looks like a wrong turn. When He tells the Israelites to march around Jericho instead of storming it, the strategy makes no sense from ground level. When Jesus says to love your enemies, every instinct in us wants to recalculate.

But the Almighty sees what we cannot. He processes the full picture of our lives — past, present, and future — and His directions account for dangers and destinations we are not yet aware of.

The next time God's instruction feels like the long way around, remember: obedience is not blind. It is trusting the One who sees the whole road.
