The Map They Never Saw
Every autumn, monarch butterflies leave southern Canada and the northern United States and fly up to three thousand miles to a small cluster of oyamel fir trees in the mountains of central Mexico. What makes this journey astonishing is that the butterflies making the trip have never been there before. It was their great-great-grandparents who left Mexico the previous spring. No single monarch completes the round trip. It takes four generations.
Neuroscientist Steven Reppert at the University of Massachusetts Medical School discovered that monarchs navigate using a time-compensated sun compass located in their antennae, combined with sensitivity to Earth's magnetic field. They carry within them everything they need to find a place they have never seen.
There is something profoundly biblical in this. The Almighty told Abraham to leave his country and go to a land He would show him. Abraham did not get a map. He got a command and a promise. Hebrews 11:8 says he "obeyed and went, even though he did not know where he was going."
Obedience rarely means God shows us the full picture first. It means we carry within us, through His Spirit, His Word, His still small voice, everything we need to follow where He leads. The monarchs do not understand the magnetic field pulling them south. They simply fly. Sometimes the most faithful thing we can do is the same: take the next step, even when we cannot see the destination.
