The Map They Never Studied

Every autumn, monarch butterflies begin a journey of up to three thousand miles from Canada to a remote forest in the mountains of Michoacan, Mexico. What makes this remarkable is that the butterflies making the trip have never been there before. They are several generations removed from the monarchs that left Mexico the previous spring. No parent taught them the route. No scout flew ahead to mark the trail.

In 1975, after decades of painstaking research, zoologist Fred Urquhart and his team finally discovered the monarchs' wintering grounds. What they found astonished the scientific community: millions of butterflies clustered on the same oyamel fir trees their ancestors had left months earlier, guided by a navigational code written into their very DNA.

These small creatures obey an instruction they cannot see, comprehend, or verify. They simply follow, and the following brings them exactly where they need to be.

There is something here for every one of us who has heard the voice of the Almighty and hesitated. God does not always show us the full map. He rarely explains the route in advance. But He has written His purposes into our hearts, and when we obey, even without full understanding, we arrive at exactly the place He prepared.

Obedience is not blind. It is trust with wings.
