The Obedience Written Into Every Cell
In 2002, scientists Sydney Brenner, H. Robert Horvitz, and John Sulston received the Nobel Prize in Medicine for a startling discovery about how life works. Every healthy cell in your body carries instructions for its own death. Scientists call it apoptosis — programmed cell death. When a cell has fulfilled its purpose or detects something wrong within itself, it receives a chemical signal, and it obeys. It quietly dismantles itself for the good of the whole body.
This is not a flaw. It is the design. Your body replaces billions of cells every single day, and each replacement depends on older cells willingly stepping aside.
But sometimes a cell refuses the signal. It ignores the instruction to stop growing, to surrender, to make room. It keeps multiplying on its own terms, serving its own agenda. We have a name for that: cancer.
Disobedience at the cellular level looks remarkably like disobedience at the spiritual level. When we refuse the voice of the Almighty — when we insist on our own way, our own timing, our own agenda — we do not just harm ourselves. We disrupt the body. Paul reminded us that we are all members of one body, and what affects one part affects every part.
Obedience is not the death of your freedom. It is the design that keeps the whole body alive. The cell that surrenders to its calling is the cell that makes life possible.
