In 1949, Canadian neuropsychologist Donald Hebb proposed a principle that revolutionized our understanding of the brain: neurons that fire together wire together. This is exactly what the writer of Hebrews describes when speaking of the mature, "who by constant use have trained themselves to distinguish good from evil" (Hebrews 5:14). That phrase "constant use" — the Greek is hexis, a habit formed through repeated practice.
God does not ask for our obedience because He needs it. He asks because He knows how we are made. Every small act of obedience reshapes us — literally, physically — into people for whom righteousness feels less like duty and more like home.
The first step of obedience is always the hardest. The God who designed your brain made sure it would not stay that way.
