The Prescription That Only Works If You Take It

In 1921, Frederick Banting and Charles Best discovered insulin at the University of Toronto, transforming Type 1 diabetes from a death sentence into a manageable condition. But here is what every endocrinologist knows: insulin only works if the patient follows the regimen. The vial sitting unopened on the counter saves no one.

Diabetic compliance means checking blood glucose levels multiple times a day, calculating carbohydrate intake before every meal, injecting the correct dose at the correct time, and adjusting for exercise, stress, and illness. It is not glamorous work. Much of it feels repetitive, even tedious. But patients who follow the protocol faithfully see their hemoglobin A1C levels drop into healthy ranges. Their eyesight holds. Their kidneys function. Their nerves stay intact. Those who ignore the regimen, even while the medicine sits right there in their refrigerator, face blindness, amputation, and organ failure.

God's commands work the same way. Scripture is not a list of arbitrary restrictions handed down by a distant authority. It is a prescription written by the Physician who designed every cell in your body. But obedience is the mechanism of delivery. James understood this when he wrote, "Be doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving yourselves."

The medicine has already been given. The Great Physician has already written the prescription. The only question left for each of us is whether we will follow it.
