The Prescription You Must Not Quit

In his 1945 Nobel Prize lecture, Alexander Fleming issued a warning that still echoes through hospital corridors today. The man who discovered penicillin told the world that if patients stopped taking their antibiotics too early — the moment they felt better rather than completing the full course — surviving bacteria could develop resistance. The very medicine designed to heal them would become powerless.

Fleming was right. Antibiotic resistance is now one of the gravest threats in modern medicine, and it often begins with a simple, human impulse: I feel fine now, so I can stop.

How many of us approach obedience to God the same way? We cry out in seasons of desperation, and when He begins to bring relief, we quietly set aside the disciplines that drew us close to Him. We stop praying with urgency. We drift from the community that held us up. We abandon the hard, daily surrender that invited His healing in the first place.

But God does not prescribe obedience to burden us. He prescribes it because He sees what we cannot — the infection that still lingers beneath the surface, the spiritual resistance that builds when we follow Him only halfway.

Partial obedience is not obedience at all. It is the spiritual equivalent of a half-finished prescription, and it leaves us more vulnerable than before.
