The Roots That Know Which Way to Go

In 1880, Charles Darwin and his son Francis published a remarkable discovery in The Power of Movement in Plants. They found that plant roots always grow downward, no matter how you orient the seed. Turn a seedling sideways, flip it upside down — within hours, the root bends and redirects itself toward the earth. Scientists now call this gravitropism.

The mechanism is breathtakingly simple. Tiny starch-filled granules called statoliths sit inside specialized cells at the root tip. When gravity pulls them downward, they settle against the cell wall and trigger a cascade of hormones that tell the root exactly which direction to grow. The root does not debate. It does not weigh its options. It senses the pull and responds.

Here is what strikes me. The root cannot see the water table below. It cannot know that minerals and moisture wait in the deep soil. It simply obeys the gravitational signal, and in obeying, it finds everything it needs to sustain life.

We are not so different. The Lord calls us to obey before we can see the outcome. He asks us to grow in a direction that may feel disorienting, even upside down. We cannot always see the provision that waits on the other side of our yes. But the One who designed gravity itself — El Shaddai, God Almighty — has built into His word a signal as reliable as the force that holds the planets in their orbits.

Obedience is not blind. It is the root trusting the pull of its Maker toward everything it needs.
