The Rope That Held When Nothing Else Could

In the 2016 film Hacksaw Ridge, Private Desmond Doss stands before a military tribunal for refusing to carry a rifle. His fellow soldiers mock him. His commanding officers try to break him. Everyone insists he cannot serve his country without a weapon in his hands. But Doss made a promise to the Almighty — he would not take a life. He would save them instead.

His obedience looked like foolishness. It cost him friendships, dignity, and nearly his freedom. Yet when the Battle of Okinawa turned into a slaughterhouse atop that jagged escarpment, Doss stayed behind while everyone else retreated. One by one, he dragged wounded soldiers to the cliff's edge and lowered them to safety on a rope, praying the same prayer over and over: "Lord, help me get one more."

Seventy-five men survived that night because one soldier obeyed a calling no one else understood.

Obedience to God rarely makes sense to the people watching. It didn't make sense when Abraham walked up the mountain. It didn't make sense when Moses stretched his staff over the sea. The crowd will always have an opinion about your obedience. But God does not ask us to obey because it looks reasonable. He asks us to obey because He sees what we cannot — that on the other side of surrender, there is rescue.

What has the Lord asked of you that the world says makes no sense? Do it anyway. He is faithful.
