The Rover That Trusts the Signal
In February 2021, NASA's Perseverance rover landed on Mars and began exploring Jezero Crater. What makes this machine remarkable isn't just its engineering — it's its obedience. Every command Perseverance receives from the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena travels across space with a delay of up to twenty minutes each way. The rover cannot call back and ask, "Are you sure about this?" It cannot see the orbital maps or the terrain imaging that the engineers are studying. It simply receives the instruction — turn here, drill there, cross this ridge — and it obeys.
That obedience has led Perseverance to extraordinary discoveries: ancient river deltas, organic molecules, rock samples that may one day reveal whether life ever existed on another world. None of it would have happened if the rover had been designed to second-guess the signal.
We are not so different. God speaks, and often there is a delay before we understand why. He says forgive, and we cannot yet see the healing on the other side. He says give, and we cannot yet see what He will provide. He says go, and the destination makes no sense from where we are standing.
But the engineers can see what the rover cannot. And the God who mapped the stars before they burned can certainly see what we cannot.
Obedience is not the absence of questions. It is the decision to move before every question is answered, trusting that the One who sent the signal sees the whole terrain.
