The Stones No One Would See

When builders began work on Chartres Cathedral in 1194, they committed to a project that would outlast every one of them. The master builder drew plans for soaring vaults and flying buttresses that no one had ever attempted at that scale. Then he handed those plans to ordinary stonemasons.

These craftsmen spent decades carving elaborate details — intricate leaf patterns, delicate figures, ornamental flourishes — on stones that would be hoisted sixty feet into the air, far beyond the reach of any human eye. No visitor walking through the nave would ever see the painstaking work on the back of a capital or the top of a column. Yet the masons carved every surface with the same devotion, because they understood something profound: their obedience was not to a human audience but to the Almighty.

The masons did not need to understand the full architectural plan. They did not need to see the finished cathedral. They simply needed to faithfully shape the stone in front of them according to the master builder's design.

Obedience works the same way in the life of faith. God rarely shows us the completed picture. He hands us one stone — one task, one conversation, one act of faithfulness — and asks us to carve it with everything we have. We may never see how our obedience fits into His larger design. But the Master Builder does. And every faithful stroke matters to Him, whether the world notices or not.
