The Unarmed Soldier Who Saved Seventy-Five
In Hacksaw Ridge, Private Desmond Doss stands before a military tribunal with nothing but a quiet conviction: he will serve his country in World War II, but he will not carry a rifle. His obedience to the Lord's command — "Thou shalt not kill" — costs him dearly. Fellow soldiers beat him in his bunk. Officers try to discharge him as unfit. Everyone around him insists that obedience to God and obedience to duty cannot coexist.
Doss refuses to budge.
During the Battle of Okinawa, his unit scales a jagged cliff called Hacksaw Ridge and is torn apart by enemy fire. When the order comes to retreat, every able soldier rappels back down. But Doss stays. Alone on that blood-soaked ridge, he drags wounded men to the cliff's edge, lowers them to safety on a rope, and prays the same words over and over: "Lord, help me get one more."
By morning, he has saved seventy-five lives — without ever touching a weapon.
Here is what obedience looks like: it rarely makes sense to the people watching. It will cost you comfort, reputation, and sometimes the approval of people you respect. But the God who asks for your obedience is the same God who works through it in ways you cannot predict. Doss could not have imagined what one night of faithfulness would accomplish. Neither can you. Obey anyway.
