The Update You Didn't Think You Needed
In 2023, Apple released something new called a Rapid Security Response — a tiny software patch pushed to every iPhone with unusual urgency. No new features. No visible changes. Just a quiet fix for a vulnerability most users would never understand. Many people dismissed the notification. "My phone works fine," they thought. But Apple's security engineers had spotted a threat that no individual user could see — a flaw that left millions exposed without their knowing it.
Obedience to God often feels like that update notification. The command seems small, maybe even unnecessary. Forgive that person. Give that money away. Hold your tongue in that conversation. Your life appears to be running fine without it. But God sees vulnerabilities in your soul that you cannot detect on your own. His commands are not arbitrary restrictions — they are patches for weaknesses you do not yet know you have.
The Psalmist wrote, "I have hidden your word in my heart that I might not sin against you" (Psalm 119:11). Scripture functions like that security update — it addresses threats before they become breaches.
The phone that skips every update still turns on. It still makes calls. But over time, it becomes dangerously exposed. Do not mistake functioning for flourishing. The Father who asks for your obedience is the One who sees what you cannot.
