When Waze Says Recalculating

Every driver knows the moment. Waze plots your route — the fastest path calculated from real-time traffic data crowdsourced from millions of other drivers — and then you decide you know better. You take the shortcut through the neighborhood. You ignore the left turn. And that calm voice responds with a single word: "Recalculating."

Waze doesn't argue. It doesn't lock the steering wheel. It simply finds a new route to the same destination — but now the estimated arrival time has jumped by twelve minutes. The original route, the one you ignored, accounted for a traffic jam you couldn't see, a construction zone three miles ahead, a school zone that would have slowed you to a crawl. The algorithm had information you didn't have.

This is the heart of biblical obedience. When God says, "This is the way; walk in it" (Isaiah 30:21), He isn't issuing arbitrary commands from a distant throne. He is the One who sees every road, every obstacle, every danger that lies ahead. He has information we simply don't have.

The beautiful thing is that God, like that patient voice in your navigation app, keeps recalculating. He never abandons the destination He has for you. But every detour costs something — time, peace, sometimes real pain — that the original route of obedience would have spared you.

The shortest distance between where you are and where God wants you to be is simple, immediate obedience. Trust the One who sees the whole map.
